Is the GHANA Tour (Sankofa Experience) right for you?

Vehicles drive on a dusty dirt road under a cloudy sky with Ghana and US flags.

Important Travel Considerations

Ghana is currently undergoing significant growth and development, including major road construction projects across parts of the country. While this progress is exciting, it may impact travel times and road conditions during your journey.

This region of West Africa offers a rich, deeply immersive cultural experience that differs from more traditional tourist destinations. Tourism infrastructure is still developing, and some services and amenities you may be accustomed to may be more limited. We invite you to come with an open mind and a spirit of curiosity, ready to embrace an authentic pace of life shaped by local culture and traditions.

You may receive attention from locals—this is typically warm, respectful curiosity and part of the experience. Hotels are often located outside of city centers, which may limit independent exploration. Service is welcoming and hospitable, though it may differ from Western-style expectations. Meal variety may be more limited, and specialized dietary needs (such as vegan, gluten-free, or lactose-free) can be challenging to accommodate.

Visits to historic landmarks such as Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle are powerful and emotional experiences, offering a profound connection to history—particularly the transatlantic slave trade—and remain central highlights of this journey.

Things to Consider

  • Road conditions may include long, bumpy, or dusty routes, and travel times may vary due to ongoing development
  • Vehicles used for touring do not have onboard restrooms
  • Certain experiences, such as the boat excursion, require moderate mobility and agility for boarding
  • Travelers must carry proof of yellow fever vaccination
  • Consultation with a healthcare provider regarding malaria prevention is strongly recommended
  • Travel conditions and checkpoints may occasionally be unpredictable, requiring patience and flexibility
  • Guests are encouraged to follow the guidance of the Tour Manager regarding safety, documentation, and local interactions

Transportation

This itinerary includes two travel days of approximately five hours of road travel between Accra and the Central Region. Thoughtfully scheduled comfort stops for restrooms and stretching will be incorporated along the way to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey.

Pace & Terrain

Expect warm, sunny, and humid weather throughout your journey. Daily experiences may include light to moderate walking, along with periods of standing.

Some locations may involve:

  • Uneven or natural terrain
  • Steps, slopes, or inclines
  • Outdoor environments with varying conditions

FINAL NOTE:

This journey is designed for those who are open, flexible, and ready to embrace both the beauty and authenticity of Ghana in a meaningful and transformative way.
